Wigal will be pinned with her new eagles by her husband, David, and their sons, Sam and Blake.
Wigal assumed command of the 184th Medical Group and its 74 members on May 4, 2014, making her the first female group commander in the history of the 184th IW.
The 184th Medical Group also provides worldwide deployment medical readiness support for members of the 184th Intelligence Wing through ongoing physical exam screening, immunization, environmental and occupational health monitoring, self-aid training, and wellness education.
Wigal, a native of Hoisington, Kansas, graduated from St. Mary of the Plains College, Dodge City, Kansas, in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing.
She commissioned in the United States Air Force on May 13, 1988, and attended Military Indoctrination for Medical Service Officers for three weeks at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, in February 1989.
She then started a five-month nurse internship at Kessler Air Force Base in March 1989 with her follow-on assignment to Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, on Aug. 19, 1989.
Wigal completed her commitment in February 1992, and entered Individual Readiness Reserve status for seven years. During this time, she traveled to several states, including Washington, Alaska, Florida and Maryland, working as a contract registered nurse with her final assignment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C.
She returned to Kansas in 1997, and she joined the Kansas Air National Guard, 184th Medical Squadron in March 1999, as a clinical nurse. In December 2010, she assumed command of the 184th Medical Group Medical Operations Division and on June 5, 2011, she also took over responsibilities as the chief nurse.
She is currently employed as an advanced practice registered nurse with healthcare clinics at Walgreen Company.
She has served on the board of the Association of Air National Guard Nurses.
Wigal’s education includes a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing, St. Mary of the Plains College, Dodge City, Kansas; Military Indoctrination of Medical Service Officers, Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas; Nursing Internship Program, Kessler Air Force Base, Louisiana; Master of Science degree in nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner, Wichita State University; Post Masters Certificate, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Wichita State University; and Air War College.
Wigal’s awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with two devices, National Defense Service Medal with one device, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award,
Armed Forces Reserve Medal with two devices, Air Force Training Ribbon with one device, Kansas National Guard State Emergency Duty Service Ribbon and the Kansas National Guard Achievement Ribbon.
