WYANDOTTE COUNTY TRAFFIC: K-5 Resurfacing Project to Begin in Wyandotte and Leavenworth Counties

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- On Monday, August 18, a pavement repair and resurfacing project will begin on a 10.3-mile stretch of K-5 from I-435 to U.S. 73 in Leavenworth and Wyandotte Counties.

Project work includes pavement patching on mainline lanes, followed by a 1.5-inch asphalt mill and fill. Work will take place during daylight hours (7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.), Monday through Saturday.

Traffic control installation work will begin on Monday, August 18. Once traffic control is in place sometime later that same day, northbound and southbound K-5 will be reduced to one lane for both directions, several miles at a time, during project work hours throughout the project duration. There will also be intermittent closures of adjacent cross roads during the project work hours.

Traffic will be directed through the project work zone via a pilot car and flagger operation. There will be an 11-foot lane width restriction and a reduced posted speed limit through the project work zone throughout the project duration. Drivers should expect delays of up to 15 minutes maximum and are encouraged to use alternate routes, if possible.

Updated daily traffic information for this project and for the entire Kansas Metro Area can be viewed online at: www.ksdot.org/kcmetro/laneclose.asp

The Kansas Department of Transportation urges all motorists to be alert, obey the warning signs, and “Give ‘Em a Brake!” when approaching and driving through the project work zone.

Bettis Asphalt & Construction Inc. (Topeka, KS) is the primary contractor on this resurfacing project with a total contract cost of $1.1 million. Project work is scheduled to be completed in mid-September 2014, weather permitting.

This project is funded by T-WORKS, the transportation program passed by the Kansas Legislature in May 2010. Find out more about these and other T-WORKS projects at: http://kdotapp.ksdot.org/TWorks/.
