KANSAS CITY, Kan. – For the first time since July of last year the T-Bones completed a series sweep, as they scored in the bottom of the ninth and beat Gary SouthShore 7-6 Sunday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
Down 6-3 with two outs in the eighth, Brian Erie and Robby Kuzdale ripped back-to-back singles up the middle. T.J. Mittelstaedt then crushed a three-run home run that tied the game at 6-6.
The T-Bones completed the comeback when David Espinosa led off the ninth with a triple to left-center. On the very next pitch Espinosa advanced home on a wild pitch by Kevin Brahney, giving Kansas City the win and clinching the series sweep. It was the T-Bones first sweep since they won three against Grand Prairie during July 15-17, 2013.
Sunday, with Gary leading 2-1, the RailCats padded their lead with a three-run fifth inning. Both Cody Bishop and Drew Muren smoked back-to-back one-out doubles. After a Kansas City error, Craig Maddox lined an RBI single that gave the RailCats a 5-1 lead.
Kansas City cut the deficit in fifth when Mittelstaedt launched a leadoff solo home run over the left-field wall. The T-Bones then loaded the bases with no outs, and managed to bring in one run when Vladimir Frias flew out scoring Bryan Sabatella.
With the win, the T-Bones are now 22-21 and trail Gary by 1 1/2 games in the Central. Kansas City is off Monday before beginning a three-game road trip at Winnipeg beginning Tuesday night.
