KCKCC Vocal Music program prepares for upcoming performances

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- Want to hear some outstanding music from the Kansas City Kansas Community College choral program? Two upcoming concerts will give music lovers that chance.

The first of two concerts coming up within the next week is the KCKCC Vocal Showcase Concert. The show is at 3 p.m. March 9 at Trinity Community Church, 5010 Parallel Parkway in Kansas City, Kan.

The concert is free and open to the public, although donations will be accepted for student travel. The concert will feature the Community Chamber Choir, Chamber Choir and Vocal Jazz Ensembles as well as solo selections by KCKCC Voice Faculty Tara Cooper and Scott Wichael. The music being performed will be by several composers including Mealor, Brinsmead, Stafford, Shaw/Parker, Whitacre and Hogan.

“The two voice faculty will sing operatic selections with Joyce Steeby (KCKCC Staff Accompanist) at the piano,” said John Stafford, director of choral music at KCKCC. “Tara Cooper is a mezzo-soprano and Scott Wichael is a tenor. Both sing with the Kansas City Lyric Opera.”

The second concert is the Vocal Jazz Cabaret, which is at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 13 in Upper Jewell on the KCKCC campus, 7250 State Ave. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for seniors and students. It will feature a catered dinner, complimentary drinks and a silent auction. The event is a fundraiser for student travel and will feature Cajun food.

In addition to the two performances, the Music Club will be having a St. Patrick’s Bake Sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 5 and 6 in the Deli Area on the KCKCC campus. The fundraiser will be an opportunity to purchase baked goods as well as tickets to the Jazz Cabaret.
