Mike Waldeck has been named a BPU Everyday Hero for his integrity, work ethic and positive effect on the morale and productivity of those around him.
A committee of peers and community members selected Waldeck from among the many BPU employees nominated for this award. BPU launched the Everyday Hero Program as a way to recognize employees who go above and beyond at work and in the community.
Joining the BPU team in February of 1980, Waldeck started as a janitor and has worked his way to Lead Equipment Operator during the years.
He embraces BPU’s customer focus, putting his friends, neighbors and fellow community members first on a daily basis, and it is not out-of-the-norm for him to go out of his way to make a neighbor feel comfortable. For 34 years, he has had a major impact on the Kansas City, Kansas, community and, most notably, his co-workers.
His peers describe Waldeck as a selfless, salt-of-the-earth guy, who has served as a leader and a mentor to his team, and they credit him for teaching them what it means to have a strong work ethic.
His hard-working attitude and enthusiasm for BPU encourages and challenges every member of his team. With over three decades of service, his legacy of passion and integrity is sure to live on in the people he's inspired and the community he's served.
The Waldeck family also serves the community by running the local favorite, MeMa’s Bakery, which has two area locations. In his spare time, Mike enjoys pheasant hunting, fishing, playing with his grandkids and has served as a dedicated youth football coach.
“I like working, and I have fun doing it,” said Mike. “Hopefully I’m teaching someone along the way.”
