KCKCC women hit century mark in latest victory

Kansas City Kansas Community College’s women went on their biggest scoring spree in six years Thursday as the unbeaten Lady Blue Devils raced to a 104-40 win over Missouri Valley’s JV.

It was the sixth straight win for the Blue Devils, who are at home again Tuesday against Allen County in the first game of a doubleheader at 5 p.m. The Blue Devil men will take on Allen in the 7 p.m. nightcap, their final home game until Jan. 6, 2014.

The Blue Devils turned in all kinds of personal bests in scoring the most points since piling up 108 against Mermac Nov. 17, 2007. The all-time record is 120 set in 1996. Sophomore Bailey West led a career high 19 points plus seven rebounds while Samantha Hurst set a new high with seven assists.

Freshmen personal bests included 17 points by Janai Mitchell, 16 by Rashaun Casey and 10 assists by Cassidy Harbert, who also added nine points and seven rebounds. Julia Garrard chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds and Alyson Weber with a career best eight points.

The Blue Devils shot 46.9 percent for the game but 52.5 percent in a 57-point second half. KCKCC also dominated the rebounding 51-39 and committed only eight turnovers while forcing 34.
