KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- If you like lots of scoring, there was an abundance in the Kansas City Kanas Community College Field House Monday night as the Lady Blue Devils raced to a 95-76 win over a stubborn Ottawa JV team while the Blue Devil men routed Livin’ The Dream in an 89-75 exhibition win.
The wins set up a big weekend at the Field House, which will be host to the 10th annual Keith Lindsey Classic featuring eight games in two days
The Blue Devil women will play Benedictine’s JV Friday at 6 p.m. and Neosho County Saturday at 4 p.m. while the KCKCC men will host North Arkansas at 8 p.m. Friday and On Point Academy Saturday at 6 p.m. In other games Friday, Johnson County, the No. 1 ranked Division II in the nation, will play Neosho County at 2 p.m. and the Highland men will fact On Point Academy at 4 p.m. Saturday action will being at noon.
Five Blue Devils scored a dozen or more points in one of the biggest scoring outbursts in the last 15 years in the opener Monday. And needed them. Ottawa built at 51-44 halftime lead by hitting 9 of 16 3-pointers for 56.3 percent and KCKCC had to shoot 51.2 percent the second half to break the game open.
Freshman Cassidy Harbert just missed a triple double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, while sophomores Samantha Hurst and Bailey West led the scoring and rebounding, Hurst with 17 points and five assists and West in rebounding with 13 along with 12 points.
Other freshmen contributions came from Iland Shurn, 14 points and 8 rebounds; Janai Mitchell, 13 points and 9 rebounds; Rashaun Casey, 9 points; and Eirenei Alesana, 8 points.
The Blue Devil men, on the other hand, raced to a 33-12 lead and led 49-33 at the half in their 89-75 exhibition win over Livin’ The Dream, a collection of former college and professional players.
Hitting 7 of 12 3-pointers, the Blue Devils shot 62.1 percent in the first half and finished at 55.0 percent for the game.
Sophomore Antonio Winn led with 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists while Lansing freshman Clay Young added 17 points on 8 of 11 shooting.
Brandon Ward had 15 points including three treys; Anthony Ridley 10 points and 5 rebounds; C.J. Vallejo, 9 points and 5 rebounds; and Stephen Lembach 7 points.
