Choral Jazz Program hits stage next week with fall concert

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- The choral groups at Kansas City Kansas Community College will be presenting their Fall Vocal Jazz Concert later this month.

The concert is at 7 p.m. Nov. 20 in the KCKCC Performing Arts Center, 7250 State Ave. Donations of $5 are being accepted to go toward the vocal department’s trip to New York City in April.

“The Standard” Vocal Jazz Ensemble, the flagship vocal ensemble at KCKCC, has been selected to perform March 1at the 2014 Kansas Music Educators Association In-Service Workshop as well as the New York City Jazz Festival April 11-14.

The fall concert will feature the “Soulstice” Vocal Jazz Ensemble and “The Standard” Vocal Jazz Ensemble, both directed by John Stafford II, assistant professor of choral music at KCKCC.

The vocal jazz ensembles are quickly developing a strong reputation throughout the Midwest, having recently performed at the Fox Fest Jazz Festival in Creston, Iowa; the North Central American Choral Directors Association Vocal Jazz Festival in Columbus, Neb.; The Friends University Jazz Festival and the New York Voices Jazz Festival in Chicago, Ill.

For this concert, the ensembles will perform music by Take 6, Nat King Cole, Paul Simon and The Beatles, with a mix of blues, hip-hop and gospel.
