KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- Get ready to celebrate the creativeness and artistic expression of Kansas City Kansas Community College students with the unveiling of “Scenic Route.”
“Scenic Route” is a magazine started by KCKCC instructor Tasha Haas to recognize the creative talents of KCKCC students. Started in 2010, it includes student poems, stories, plays and essays as well as student artwork in a variety of different mediums. In addition to KCKCC students, submissions from students in the Kansas City Kansas School District are also accepted.
“It emerged from myself and the students in my creative writing class here on campus,” Haas said of the magazine. “These students served as editors and designers of the magazine, and this year’s will be the fourth issue.”
The release of this year’s edition will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23 in the Intercultural Center on the KCKCC campus. In addition to readings from the publication, Haas will be presenting a $500 Phil Miller Creative Writing Scholarship to Shane Morioka, a KCKCC student. Established in honor of former faculty member and poet, Phil Miller, this is the first year the scholarship has been awarded.
“His family has generously established the scholarship in order to support student writers at the college,” Haas said. “Quality, original work that makes readers think, feel, and dream. Beautiful work. Powerful work. Writing and art that have a strong message, something to say. That is the kind of work we want to publish.”
Students can submit up to three poems, three pieces of artwork or 25 pages of prose for consideration in “Scenic Route.” Only one submission from each student will be considered for publication, and all artwork must be original.
