My Shelf To Yours at KCKCC was created in 2010 as a way to promote scholarship, leadership, entrepreneurship and sustainability by selling donated used books both on-line and on-ground. The student-operated bookstore has well exceeded its original business plan goals and has earned national recognition from eBay’s Green Team for recycling books to help fellow students in financial need with textbooks and tuition. As of July 1, 2013, My Shelf To Yours has received more than 34,000 donated books from 260 donors and assisted 205 students with 512 textbooks. During that time, $8,850 has been given in tuition scholarships.
Any unsold book donations from the October sale will be distributed to KCKCC’s Phi Theta Kappa honor society which sends used textbooks to Africa; KCKCC’s Early Childhood Education program, which sells children’s and parenting books at their annual garage sale for funding student attendance at educational workshops and Hillcrest Transitional Housing which assists homeless families with housing and jobs through its proceeds from their area thrift shops.
