TOPEKA, KAN. – Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt today announced five Kansas City-area organizations have been awarded grants totaling $256,500 for its victims service programs.
Friends of Yates, Kansas City, Kan., was awarded a $56,000 grant to provide for overall day-to-day administration, program operations, and staff development for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault, Kansas City, Mo., was awarded a $43,500 grant to provide services for victims of sexual assault in Johnson, Wyandotte and Miami counties.
Tenth Judicial District Johnson County Court Services, Olathe, was awarded a $26,000 grant to provide supervised exchanges and visitation for court-ordered families through the Family Court of the 10th Judicial District.
SAFEHOME, Inc., Overland Park, was awarded a $25,000 grant to fund a lethality prevention advocate, who will provide vital immediate assistance, safety planning, follow-up, clinical intake advocacy and case management to victims in crisis. The organization was also awarded a $66,500 grant to provide victims of domestic violence and their children with shelter, emergency assistance, case management, and community referrals to help them achieve independent lives free from violence.
Sunflower House, Inc., Shawnee was awarded a $17,000 grant to implement child abuse prevention programs to area children, parents and professionals including body safety, Internet and cell phone safety, and reporting strategies. The organization was also awarded a $22,500 grant to help support a new family advocate position within its Child Assessment Program that would meet with the non-offending caregivers during the child’s visit to provide resources and offer ongoing support.
“The work of our victims service organizations throughout the state ensures that services are available to crime victims in their hour of need,” Schmidt said. “We are proud to support the work of these organizations through the victims services grant programs in our office.”
These grants were awarded from the Protection from Abuse Fund, the Child Exchange and Visitation Centers Fund, the State Crime Victims Assistance Fund and the State Crime Victims Assistance Fund for Child Abuse and Neglect. The victim services grant programs are funded by state general fund, marriage license fees, district court fines, penalties and forfeitures, county court costs and municipal court assessments.
This year, the Attorney General’s Office awarded more than $2 million in grants to local and state crime victim assistance organizations.
