KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- The 72nd Street Bridge over Interstate 70 will be closed beginning Nov. 1.

At 9:00 a.m. on Friday, November 1, the 72nd Street bridge over eastbound and westbound I-70 will be CLOSED, 24/7 round the clock, through early December 2013, so crews can repair work on the bridge from damage incurred by a October 3rd bridge strike by a dump truck completing work on the I-70 resurfacing project (see traffic alert below for more information) in Wyandotte County. No marked detour will be provided during the 35-day 72nd Street Bridge closure. Drivers will need to use alternate routes during the bridge closure.
EXPECT DELAYS! OVERNIGHT ROADWAY CLOSURES: In addition, the following lane and ramp closures will take place Monday, November 1 through Tuesday, November 5, weather permitting, for the 72nd Street bridge repair work.
Friday, November 1 to reopen at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 2 - Remove damaged bridge girder
7:00 p.m. Close eastbound I-70 left two lanes from 78th Street to 72nd Street
7:00 p.m. Close westbound I-70 left lane at 72nd Street
9:00 p.m. Close eastbound State Avenue right lane at 78th Street
9:00 p.m. Close southbound College Parkway right lane at State Avenue
9:00 p.m. Close southbound 78th Street left lane at State Avenue
11:00 p.m. Close all lanes of eastbound I-70 at 78th Street
Saturday, November 2 to reopen at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 3 - Remove damaged bridge girder
6:00 p.m. Close eastbound I-70 left lane from 78th Street to 72nd Street
6:00 p.m. Close westbound I-70 left lane at 72nd Street
Monday, November 4 between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Close eastbound I-70 left lane from 78th Street to 72nd Street
Close westbound I-70 left lane at 72nd Street
Monday, November 4 to reopen at 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 5 - Set new bridge girder
7:00 p.m. Close eastbound I-70 left two lanes from 78th Street to 72nd Street
7:00 p.m. Close westbound I-70 left lane at 72nd Street
Note: Eastbound I-70 traffic will be stopped for a short period after midnight via a rolling roadblock by local law enforcement so that crews can set the new bridge girder.
A marked detour will be provided via northbound 78th Street to eastbound State Avenue to southbound College Parkway during the overnight roadway closures. See aerial map below for marked detour route. Drivers should expect delays and must use alternate routes during the overnight closures.
