GARY, Ind. – After waiting 73 minutes to start the series opener against Gary SouthShore because of rain, Kansas City pitchers gave up 11 hits and eight walks in a 10-6 loss to the RailCats on Monday night.
The scoring began with a four-run second inning for the RailCats. Drew Martinez drove a one-out double over the head of left fielder Justin Bass that scored Brian Kolb. Four batters and two walks later, Mike Massaro cleared the bases with a three-run triple that gave Gary a 4-0 lead.
The RailCats scored in each of the next four innings, including a three-run fifth inning, and took a 10-2 lead before Kansas City put together a rally and scored four in the eighth.
In the inning, Jairo Perez homered for the 12th time this season. Bass and Steve Yoo each had three hits apiece for the T-Bones.
Aaron Meade (3-3) took the loss for Kansas City, going just four innings and walking four to go along with six earned runs. Kansas City gave out eight walks and two hit by pitches. Six of those came around to score, proving to be more than enough for the loss.
Kansas City (16-21), which stranded 13 runners, had two or more base runners in all but the fifth, seventh and ninth innings.
Game two of the four-game series is scheduled for 12:10 on Tuesday afternoon.
