Both Kansas City Kansas Community College basketball teams got their first wins of 2013 and they did it on the road by sweeping a doubleheader at Fort Scott.
Trailing 34-31 at halftime, the Blue Devils rallied for a 66-64 win in the men’s game after the Lady Blue Devils had posted a 63-52 decision.
The wins boosted both team’s records to 5-11 heading into a twin bill against Neosho County today starting at 5 p.m. followed by another home twin bill Wednesday against Allen County.
Fort Scott shot 53.8 percent in opening its 34-31 halftime lead but it was the Blue Devils who came out blazing in the second half of the men’s game, knocking down 13 of 25 shots for 52 percent.
Dominique Washington had 19 points and D.J. Booker 12 as every Blue Devil scored at least four points.
Leaders were Anthony Lane with eight, Jordan Banks with seven and Evrard Atcho and Antonio Winn with six each. Washington also had nine rebounds and Lane seven.
Four Blue Devils scored in double figures in the women’s opener. Samantha Hurst had 12 points, Mariah Marusak and Bailey West 11 and Paris Johnson 10.
Defensively, the Lady Blue Devils forced 20 turnovers while committing only 13 and held a 44-37 advantage in rebounding as Latosha Ware brought down seven and West six.
