The Piper Pirates offense is generally one of the most balanced offenses in Kansas City, Kan.
They
didn't need balance tonight, as the Pirates ran for 500 yards against
the Sumner Academy Sabres in Thursday's 48-13 win on the road.
Improving to 6-2 on the season and 2-0 in district play, Piper jumped out to a quick start offensively.
After holding Sumner Academy to a three and out to begin the game, Piper's rushing game went to work.
Piper's
first score of the game came from Matt McDonald. McDonald was the sole
offensive provider on the first drive of the game - rushing the ball
twice for 36 yards, capping the short drive with a 27-yard touchdown.
Sumner
Academy's offense would respond. Quarterback Brandon Williams found
Jowell Daniels on a deep pass. However, Sumner's field goal attempt four
plays later would be blocked by the Piper defensive line.
Piper's rushing attack continued to plow through the Sumner line on the second drive.
McDonald
scored his second touchdown of the night, this one coming from 70 yards
out. Overall in the first quarter, McDonald had nearly 120 rushing
yards.
Behind a lengthy run by Sabres running back
Brian Cobbins, Sumner Academy again drove into Piper's red zone on the
following drive. But like their first possession, Sumner Academy could
not take advantage of the opportunity, turning the ball over on downs.
From there, the route was on.
Sophomore
Colton Beebe did his best Christian Okoye impersonation on the next
drive, literally dragging two Sabre defenders into the end zone, scoring
from 32 yards out and pushing the Piper lead to 21-0.
The
Pirates increased the lead to 28-0 after freshman Sterling Owens scored
a 75-yard touchdown on the ground. Resembling the quick strike Oregon
Ducks offense time-wise, Piper's first four touchdown drives were under
two minutes.
Behind two touchdowns from Travon Jones,
Piper increased the lead to 48-0 early in the third quarter. Jones'
75-yard touchdown run was the final score for the Pirates.
Overall in the game, Piper did not have one single passing yard.
Instead,
they continued rushing the ball, finishing the game with 500 yards on
just 30 carries. Jones had 157 yards on just seven carries; McDonald
wrapped the game up with 130 yards on just six carries and Owens had 83
yards on seven carries.
Dion Sanders scored a 65-yard touchdown on his only carry of the game.
Williams
had two touchdown passes for the Sabres, who leave the game 2-6 and 1-1
in district play. Both touchdowns went to Deon Tripp.
