Following an investigative story by POLITICO Sunday afternoon, U.S. Rep. Kevin Yoder apologized for his behavior in a congressional trip to the Middle East.
Yoder was one of several legislators on the trip, which occurred in August 2011.
Yoder jumped into the Sea of Galilee naked. He was in the presence of his wife.
Yoder apologized for the behavior in a statement to POLITICO.
“A year ago, my wife, Brooke, and I joined colleagues for dinner at the Sea of Galilee in Israel. After dinner I followed some Members of Congress in a spontaneous and very brief dive into the sea and regrettably I jumped into the water without a swimsuit,” Yoder said. “It is my greatest honor to represent the people of Kansas in Congress and [for] any embarrassment I have caused for my colleagues and constituents, I apologize.”
The Sea of Galilee is considered a Christian holy site due to being the location where Jesus Christ walked on water, according to The Bible.
POLITICO also revealed the FBI investigated the trip. However, no formal allegations of illegal behavior have resulted from the trip.
The FBI also refused to reveal why the trip was investigated.
Yoder represents the Third District of Kansas, which includes all of Wyandotte County.
