Sunflower Hills' Jerry Red wins two Public Links championships
By ALAN HOSKINS
Led by Jerry Reid, Sunflower Hills golfers excelled in the 18th annual Public Links golf tournament hosted by the Kansas Golf Association at Sunflower Hills Saturday and Sunday.
A retired Kansas City Kansas Community College vice-president, Reid took first place in both the overall net division and 50 and over gross division with a pair of one-over par 73s. In addition, he was fifth overall in the gross division at 146.
Mike Holloway of Wichita won the championship by turning in the only sub-par round on Sunday, a one-under 71 for a 141 that was two shots better than Kit Grove and Conrad Roberts, both of Lawrence.
In addition to Reid’s fifth place finish in the overall gross division, Sunflower Hills’ Reece Nigh was sixth (74-73-177), Brad Ansley 16th (72-83-155) and Bob Chatteron 18th (78-78-156). Chatterton finished runnerup to Reid in the net division at 144 with Nigh tied for third (145), Berwyn Sasek tied for sixth (146) and Tim Skorija tied for eighth (147).
Reid had two birdies and three bogeys each round.
“No double bogeys so I was really consistent both days – no disastrous holes,” said Reid. His birdies Saturday came from four feet on No. 7 and 15 feet on No. 17 and “a lot of par saving putts.”
The birdies Sunday came at No. 5 from five feet and No. 11 from 10 feet and he was two-under through 13 holes only to bogey Nos. 14, 17 and 18.
“It was pretty windy Sunday and the greens quick but the course is in great shape.”
