Twice this season, the Piper Pirates golf team was dealt tough losses to the Tonganoxie Chieftains.
The Pirates finished second to Tonganoxie at both the Kaw Valley League golf tournament and the Kansas 4A golf regional championships.
On Monday, Piper turned the tables on the Chieftains at the most important time - the Kansas 4A state tournament at Dub's Dread.
Parker Miller's 73 and Charlie Rinehart's 74 helped the Pirates edge out Tonganoxie by just one stroke, finishing the tournament with a 312 score. Tonganoxie finished with 313.
Miller finished second overall in the state tournament, four shots behind Tonganoxie's Colby Yates, who shot a career best 69 to win the individual competition.
Yates, a winner of several individual titles during his career, shot an impressive 33 on the back nine of Dub's Dread - a course that can be unforgiving at times.
However, it was the entire team effort that helped Piper pull what some considered an upset.
Three Pirates finished in the Top 15 overall.
Rinehart, after winning a playoff, claimed third place alone with his 74. Montana Fasching's 80 was good for 15th in the tournament.
