They will all be together for the 2nd Annual “My Shelf to Yours at KCKCC” used book sale at Kansas City Kansas Community College Wednesday and Thursday, April 11-12.
A fund-raiser for scholarships, the sale will be held from 8:30
a.m.-4:30 p.m. and 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday in the
Intercultural Center on the lower level of the Jewell Center on the KCKCC
campus at 7250 State Avenue.
A student-operated bookstore, “My Shelf to Yours at KCKCC” raises funds
through the sale of used books for scholarships and textbooks for active
members of the International Student Organization (ISO), Student Organization
of Latinos (SOL) and Students for Free Enterprise ((SIFE). As of Feb. 14, the
program had assisted 99 students with 238 textbooks and $2,100 in tuition
scholarships.
Books will sell for $1 each or seven
for $5 and anyone spending $5 will receive a free ticket for either an eBay or
KCKCC Bookstore gift certificate. In addition, a beverage and Krispy Kreme will
be available for $1 and there will be a raffle of a Kindle Fire for $1 per
ticket or seven for $5.
“My
Shelf to Yours” was established in June 2010 by Jeanne Crane-Smith,
Director of Emerging Workforce, as a student-operated bookstore to promote
scholarship, leadership, entrepreneurship and sustainability.
Used books, more
than 14,000 donated by KCKCC staff, faculty and students as well as community
members, are then put up for sale on-line and at KCKCC with proceeds going for scholarships
and purchase of textbooks for students who otherwise could not afford them.
At the end of the semester,
textbooks are returned to a lending library at the Intercultural Center for use
by other students in financial need. Also, donated books that are unsold are
then either swapped or donated to other non-profit organizations for finding
“new homes.”
